critical essay on "L-vis Lives: racemusic poems"...
http://www.haymarketbooks.org/pb/L-vis-Lives            Kevin Coval’s third full-length book of poetry explores the sensitive subjects of race, privilege, and cultural appropriation from the less approached side. Through these poems Coval explores the personal and political ramifications of being a white man who becomes a fan and imitator of black artists and artforms. Coval’s poems are at their...

cyanyde asked: Hey Nate!

Just wondering, are you going to be on the East Coast on February 16th, April 6th or May 6th. The middle school kids I work with in our poetry program are having open mics on those days and I know they would LOVE seeing/meeting a young black (awesome) man of color making waves in the spoken word scene. Let me know if you'd be interested and I can put you in touch with...

Conundrums: Rusting Steele  →
conundrum-sticks: Senator Jim DeMint (R) of South Carolina has recently made headlines by calling for the removal of Michael Steele as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Michael Steele has held the position since January 2009. He is the first African-American to ever be elected to the position. The…

My Conversation with Award Winning Author Adam...
*This is a real conversation, edited for clarity*
Let the record show 3 things.
1. I know nothing about goats or other farm animals (other than that they are delicious).
2. I don't smoke so all my contact with marijuana info is second hand (see what I did there?)
3. You should read everything Adam Mansbach writes. Google this man. He's official.
Adam Mansbach: I got a question for you, youngblood.
Me: what's good?
Adam Mansbach: so, let's say I were to feed a goat ten pounds of marijuana, then slaughter the goat. Would eating that goat get you high?
Rest assured, this is purely hypothetical.
Me: hahahahahaahah
Adam Mansbach: that's no kind of answer. Come on, you're in college.
Me: it might but probably not a strong high
Adam Mansbach: Please explain.
Me: it would be a better use to kill the goat and cook it with weed as a dressing or stuffing
well first off the goat would probably not be able to eat that much. it would get high and fall down or something
plus it would take so much it wouldn't be worth it
lol
Adam Mansbach: well, let's say I'm steadily feeding the goat weed for a couple of days.
Me: possibly. since weed stays in your system for a long time. that might work
Adam Mansbach: word.
Me: this is a ridiculous conversation
Adam Mansbach: eh, I'd say about par for the course. But listen, a goat would be better than a cow, right? Or a sheep?
Me: lol. probably you want an animal that is smaller but that has a lot of fat
Adam Mansbach: I've got 85 friends on facebook chat right now, Nate Marshall, and I chose to ask you. That's respect.
So a sheep, then?
Me: a lean animal metabolizes weed better
Adam Mansbach: which is funnier, though?
ah - and metabolizes is bad, right?
Me: probably a sheep
yeah metabolizing it would get rid of it
Adam Mansbach: gotcha. thanks.
Me: shouldn't you be writing an award winning book or something?
Adam Mansbach: what do you think this is for? I ain't no damn goat farmer.
you just made the acknowledgements page.

i-am-not-my-hair: By Luso Mnthali It is the seventies, at the height of Apartheid. We’re on a farm in the Western Cape, South Africa. On a typical summer’s day, a grandmother takes her small child outside the farmhouse and tells her she is going to cut her long, thick and plaited hair. Thus, a defining moment in…

Allow me to re-introduce myself
My name is Nate Marshall. Just realized that a lot of the people who I follow and vice versa I don’t actually know who they are (because they’re tumblr obscures their pic or whatever). I’m Nate. I go to Vanderbilt. umm. yeah. Look at my little profile this at the bottom of my page. I can’t sleep. I have a final in 6 hours. Shoot me.

Do you ever get the sense you're being followed?
Social networks would do well to come up with a different language to talk about people who connect with you. All these people following me is starting to get sketchy. I feel like a black leader in J. Edgar Hoover’s America.
